Retail inMotion and SunExpress win “Catering Innovation of the Year” at 2020 Onboard Hospitality Awards

These are unprecedented times not just for the airline industry but for all businesses and markets across the world. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has changed our professional and social lives but we need some positive news to keep things in perspective.

That said, the Onboard Hospitality Awards, which celebrate excellence and innovation in air, rail and cruise, are here! This year, the winners in different categories are announced in the Onboard Hospitality’s DAILY every day from March 30 to April 3.

That said, we are proud to announce that Retail inMotion and SunExpress have been honoured with the prestigious “Catering Innovation of the Year” award at the 2020 Onboard Hospitality Awards for the ‘We Care’ pages in the Sun Café & Sun Shop all-in-one catalogue.

Check out the judges’ comments about ‘We Care’ here:

“What we’d like to achieve with ‘We Care’ is to empower passengers and offer them the chance to choose sustainable products,” said José Lirio Silva, Head of Onboard Retail Europe for Retail inMotion. “In the end, we want to give people options and this is what ‘We Care’ is all about: offering an assortment of products with a sustainable character that passengers onboard SunExpress flights can choose from.”

Peter Glade, Chief Commercial Officer of SunExpress added: “Innovation has always been a vital part of our DNA. Being acknowledged for a sustainable innovation now is twice as satisfying for us because we are also always aiming at doing our part to become an environmentally friendly airline and providing our passengers with sustainable choices. With our strong partner Retail inMotion, there is yet much more to come in this field, and we are already looking forward to it.”

‘We Care’ was introduced as a new category in the SunExpress Catalogue Winter 2019/2020, with products that change on a regular basis based on seasonality and market trends.

The products included in the ‘We Care’ pages, which have a sustainability twist, have been carefully selected from various categories (like hot drinks or cosmetics). Sustainability is front and center for both Retail inMotion and SunExpress, and the outcome of this collaboration is reflected in the buy-on-board offer. Furthermore, passengers who are interested in learning more about the stories behind the products can find all the necessary information on the ‘We Care’ pages.

The ‘We Care’ pages include the following products:

  • Sprout Tea Spoon and Sprout Pencil: Sprout Spoon is a 100% biodegradable spoon and tea bag in one which can be unfolded and brewed in hot water for a cup of delicious tea. Sprout Pencil can grow into fragrant herbs, luscious flowers, or even fresh vegetables. This product comes with a mindfulness coloring book to help you relax (yes, adult coloring can actually relax your brain) and, when you’re done coloring, you can plant the pencil and it will grow into a lavender, mint or basil plant!
  • The Kind Company Power Balm is organic, vegan and is gentle on skin thanks to its natural ingredients. In addition, the company donates 5% of its proceeds to supporting people and the environment in Africa.
  • Barilla is doing its part with the ‘Good for you – good for the planet’ initiative, which represents their guiding principle and reference point for every product produced. Barilla Maccheroni Tomato & Basil can be purchased aboard SunExpress flights out of Germany.
  • nucao’s Cashew Vanilla Chocolate Bar is an organic, vegan and gluten-free chocolate bar that’s full of natural nutritious hemp seeds and nuts and is sweetened with a tiny bit of coconut blossom nectar gives passengers the chance to save the planet by eating chocolate. The company contributes to decreasing the plastic epidemic by using plastic-free packaging. Plus, for every bar sold, one tree is planted in collaboration with “Eden Reforestation Projects.” To date, nucao have planted over half a million trees, an activity which makes a real difference to climate change.

‘We Care’: What’s next?

This summer, the collection of sustainable products that can be purchased aboard SunExpress flights will welcome a couple of new items, including batteries that can be charged via USB and a watch with a strap made out of 100% recycled PET bottles.

Stay tuned to our social media channels for exciting new sustainable products included in SunExpress’ summer catalogue!

In Focus: International Day of Families

amilies come in many shapes and sizes. Family dynamics and challenges can be relatively simple or complex. There is literally not one-size-fits-all and I would love to dispel the thinking that, as a business, we only consider families with a traditional mum, dad and kids.

There is never a dull day working at Retail inMotion, our industry is in a rapid transformation which means the pace is fast and often complex but what I love most about facing these challenges is the people I get to work with every day. Our people are diverse and multicultural and this inevitably creates teams where new ideas and solutions are created – leading these teams is the most rewarding experience.

Part of the RiM DNA is problem solving ability and doing this with our teams gives me a lot of satisfaction.

RiM for me is not only the company I work for but part of my family. I had the chance to build up a team from 6 people to more than 100. More than 50% of the team I interviewed and hired myself. Apart from this, it is the inflight and travel retail industry which offers me the opportunity to work with a totally diverse universe of people and challenges me operationally and strategically every day. This is why I love working at Retail inMotion.
